NOTICE
There will be  minor changes related to permitting in RI and make sure everyone is on the same page. Please share this information with as many people as you can. This information will be going up on the RIDOT permitting site notices as well as on the FAQ page which can be found here - RIDOT_OSOW_FAQs.pdf - with all the other permitting resources.

  • We are adding a new bridge restrictions list starting in October. It will be for Annual Divisible Load Permits for a 6 axle combination vehicle. Only for divisible loads up to 104,800 lbs and only 6 or more axles. The 5 axle combination list will remain for those vehicles.
  • Electronic permits & bridge restrictions lists ARE acceptable forms of the documents. After reviewing the laws, regs, and all permit language, nothing requires a printed copy except the bridge restrictions list, which is being changed/updated for October 1st.
    • The documents MUST be readily available in the vehicle with the driver.
  • Travel time restrictions:
    • Annual divisible load permits have no travel restrictions for times, days, day or night, none.
    • Blanket permits and single trip permits have restrictions ONLY when they are over 130,000 lbs, over legal width of 8'6" or over 80' long, any one of these.
      • Those restrictions are no travel 7-9am and 3-7pm Monday through Friday plus holiday restrictions. No restrictions for weekends and no restrictions for day/night.
      • These restrictions are governed by RIGL 31-25-21 here: webserver.rilin.state.ri.us/Statutes/TITLE31/31-25/31-25-21.htm
      • Any information found contrary please bring to my attention and I will work to correct it.
  • We are now allowing oversize travel across the Washington Bridge under certain circumstances:
    • During night time only from 11pm-5am only on Sunday, Monday or Wednesday nights. No size limits, a permit MUST be acquired and the 96,000 lbs limit still applies. The time is only for the actual bridge and the rest of the route can occur during different times.

Rhode Island Independent Contractors and Associates was formed in December of 1980 in an effort to represent independent contractors within the state of Rhode Island and keep them abreast of legislation that would affect them and their business interests.

By the end of 1981, the association boasted 275 members. Since then, the association has continued to grow, exerting a strong influence on the legislature relative to contractor issues.

Why should YOU join RIICA? With the hard work, determination and ambition of our membership, we can set and meet realistic goals that will have a major impact on the interests of independent contractors in Rhode Island.
